SLAM History

In 1912 St Lukes began unofficially as a scratch fifth grade team. Then in 1913 the club was formed, a fifth grade team was registered. 1914 saw two teams registered. During the war years only one team was entered. 1919 was a grand year for the club when it gained first grade status. 1921 St Lukes won the senior championship, seven-a-side and the Davis Cup, captained by Eddie McLeod ,Menzies, Williams, Rev. Tocker, Garrard, Hookham, Mead, Rich, Coutts, Dickson, Potter, Steele, and Rowe.

St Lukes was from the St Lukes Bible Class. At least until the 1930’s all members had to be active in the St Lukes Church Bible Class. From 1925 on through the depression and onto 1938 the club achieved success and honour with many fine teams and players. Outstanding players during this period would be, M Vipond, T Clark, F Clark, W Burnett, S Robertson, M Wattam, E McLeod, W Grace, J Carroll, O Oakley, R Cameron and R Brodie.

Entertainment consisted of highly organized card evenings, these evenings did much to create and maintain club spirit, especially during the depression, and were very enjoyable even though it is said there was no gambling and no drinking. During the depression it would be realized that subscriptions and club support would be extremely difficult to meet (subs approx two pound per year) but also interesting to note is that no one defaulted with payments.

In 1939 Hobson Park was taken from Hockey and used as a camp during the war. This meant that all competitive hockey had to be at Papatoetoe. During this war St Lukes had only two teams. The club felt the terrible blow of war with the loss of the following. A.Doel, N.Conan, D.McClennan, After the war, the club began to regain it’s strength and in 1949 won the senior championship. H.B.Burnett – a name surely must be regarded as one of the greatest men in our club. His untiring efforts for St Lukes administration lasted from our inception in 1913 right up until his death in Jan 1959.

College Old Girls
Formed in 1917 by Hilda Coldham(Bicker), Connie Latimer, Myra Lang, when they left Auckland Teachers College. Their first team was played as “Old A’s” soon became Teachers College Old Girls and later College Old Girls. They played on the Remuera Hockey Grounds now Hobson Park. They had men umpires, selectors and managers.

The two world wars and a depression were very detrimental for the club – at times the N.Z. Tournament was not held and the Training College was close in 1934 (too many students and not enough jobs) and again from 1941-1944 when the College was taken over by the Health Department and later the Army. However two courageous past students revived the club, Madeline Coldham and Pat Prothero, on March 16th 1943. Since 1943 College Old Girls can be justly proud of their successes in Auckland Hockey. Won A.L.H.A championship in 1956, 58, 59, 60, 61, 69.

It is an interesting fact to note that the first and second time the “K” cup was won by Auckland , the team was led by a College Old Girl, namely Madeline Coldham 1946 and Vera Burt 1953.

In 1973 College Old Girls formed a North Shore Branch to participate in the N.S.W.H.A competitions. It was decided that the club would have a common President and Treasurer and each branch would have a Secretary and Club Captain.

Seddon Hockey Club
In 1928 Miss Edna Jeffery and a few past students of the Seddon Memorial Technical College, founded the club under the name “Technical Past Students Ladies Hockey Club.” The Club’s first representation on the executive of the A.L.H.A was in 1929 and since then members have served with distinction on this. Auckland and N.Z.W.H Umpires Associations. The Secretary of A.L.H.A for 39 years was Mrs M.G.O’Sullivan. Through the years, the club has been successful in the field of play, gaining many senior grade championship wins and providing many representative players.
In 1987 the club merged with St Lukes, Albertians Mangere to from SLAM Hockey Club.

Albertians
Formed in 1935 from past students of Mt Albert Grammar School. St George Hockey Club, formerly known as Fijian Hockey Club, amalgamated with Albertians in 1970. In 1978 Albertians merged with Mangere Ladies Hockey Club, thus becoming Albertians Mangere Hockey Club.

St Lukes Hockey Club
In 1963 St Lukes Club formed a fund raising Club called “clubspirit” which raised 1000 pounds which was loaned to A.H.A for the Hobson Park club rooms and grandstand, therefore obtaining the club rooms upstairs. The 1970s were strong years for the club seniors, winning the championship in 1974 and otherwise being in the top 3 through the 1970s. 1985,86 Club Championship winners Ramesh Patel and Mohan Patel are names that must be regarded as outstanding players of the club – obtaining a Gold Medal in Hockey at the 1976 Olympic Games. In 1981 St Lukes entered a women’s team into the A.L.H.A. In 1982 three women’s teams were entered.

Slam
First AGM for SLAM HOCKEY CLUB was in March 1987 formed from St Lukes Hockey Club, Albertians Mangere Club and the Seddon Hockey Club. The above served as a very strong club with a team in nearly every grade in both mens and womens competitions and a large junior club. In 1993 the club won both the Auckland men’s and Womens competitions, and a first in the A.H.A history. Throughout the 1990’s the club had many N.Z and Auckland seniors, age group representatives, coaches and administrators.
